Climate change is happening, and it will continue to do so, Moors opens his speech. Dry, wet, hot: patterns will keep shifting. That is why he advo- cates an integrated approach, in which solutions for foods are com-bined with solutions for droughts. Moors believes farmland can play a key role in climate adaptation. “A transition towards healthy soil condi-tions improves water infltration and benefts sustainable agriculture.”

Moors raises interesting questions. How do we share our waters, now and in the future? And what is an acceptable risk when it comes to foods? “Is it all right to get wet feet walking to your car, if your feet re- main dry in your house?” Perceptions

difer, he stresses. He illustrates it comparing the Dutch perspective to the way the United States handle water management, specifcally in San Francisco. “The threats are the same, but they do things diferently.” In the US, many diferent institutions are involved, all with diferent respon-

sibilities and approaches. The Dutch have invented great solutions, but in the Netherlands, everything works top-down.

The climate change expert is fond of adaptation. Compared to traditional strategies, he thinks an adaptive stra- tegy works a lot better. It results in more opportunities, a faster rate of development and an increase in the project area to a regional scale. Also, the time horizon is longer. <
